A Legacy on the Fairways: The Story of the City of Hearne Golf Course

ree

Established in 1935, the City of Hearne Golf Course stands as one of the oldest public golf courses in Central Texas. Created during the Great Depression era, the course was part of a broader movement by small Texas towns to offer recreational amenities that would enhance the quality of life for residents and attract visitors from surrounding communities. Built with modest resources and a great deal of community effort, the course quickly became a cherished gathering place—where families, friends, and local golf enthusiasts could come together to enjoy the game and the outdoors.

Over the decades, the course has retained much of its original character. Its signature elevated, mound-shaped greens, pine-lined fairways, and Bermuda turf create both a beautiful and challenging layout that appeals to golfers of all skill levels. Its intimate 9-hole design allows for a quick round without sacrificing strategy or scenery, making it a favorite for both casual and seasoned players.

But like many historic public courses, the City of Hearne Golf Course has faced its share of challenges—aging infrastructure, shifting budgets, and evolving recreational trends. That’s where strong leadership and community commitment have made all the difference.

Since taking office in 2022, City Manager Alonzo Echavarria-Garza has played a central role in championing the preservation and revitalization of this important civic asset. Working closely with the Hearne Golf Course Association, a dedicated group of local volunteers and stakeholders, Echavarria-Garza has helped guide efforts to maintain and modernize the facility while honoring its historic roots.

Under his leadership, the city has prioritized reinvestment in the course's maintenance and visibility—securing resources to improve turf conditions, update equipment, and enhance the overall experience for guests. Beyond the physical improvements, Echavarria-Garza and the association have also emphasized outreach, encouraging youth programs, tournaments, and community events that bring new energy and a broader audience to the course.

Their shared mission is simple but powerful: to ensure that the City of Hearne Golf Course continues to thrive—not only as a piece of the city's history but as a living, active part of its future.

Thanks to these collaborative efforts, the course remains a proud symbol of Hearne’s resilience, hospitality, and love of the game. Whether you’re playing a casual round on a sunny afternoon or joining a local tournament, you're taking part in a tradition nearly 90 years strong—and still growing.
